Samenvatting
ALTSTADT is an architectural practice based in Brussels, directed by Jan de Moffarts and Steven Bosmans. Positioned at the intersection of design, research, and critical practice, the studio engages with the restoration, reactivation, and redefinition of the built environment through a precise and methodical approach.
Heritage, understood not as static artefact, but as a living manifestation of collective memory and shared space, constitutes both a point of departure and a field of inquiry. Yet the work is never bound by typology or historical determinism. At the heart of ALTSTADT’s practice lies an ambition to produce spatial interventions that are simultaneously radical and restrained, rigorous yet open, defined by conceptual clarity and architectural exactitude.
The studio works across scales and typologies, from the urban fragment to the domestic interior, in Brussels and beyond. Collaborations with other architectural practices and academic institutions form an essential part of this evolving network of activities, with ALTSTADT alternating between the roles of designer, researcher, and advisor.
This publication presents an anthology of projects and studies from the studio’s first five years, including formative works that laid the foundations for the partnership. It opens with a conversation between the two founders, reflecting on the themes and questions that continue to inform their practice.
