Samenvatting
Welcome aboard
Land locked Bolivia is situated in central South America. Its varied terrain features the Andes Mountains in the middle, the Atacama Desert to the South and the Amazon Basin, rainforest to the East. Its administrative capital La Paz, sits at the base of the Andes at 3,500m elevation.
Its international airport (the highest in the worlds) La Paz lies at 4,200m altitude, with the snow-capped Mt. Illimani dominating the background. Nearby Lake Titicaca, the continent largest lake, borders with Peru
La Paz, “El Alto” airport was the home of the ‘meat haulers’ (‘Caniceros’), whom primary business was to haul freshly slaughtered meat from the cow ranches in the low lands of Beni to the capital city.
These brave crew’s operated mostly outdated piston-engine WW2 transports, which were cheaply acquired from the US. Most common types used were the Douglas DC-3 Dakota, Curtiss C-46 Commando, Martin 404 and Convair 440s. One of the most well-known companies ‘FRE REYES’ operated the iconic Boeing B-17 ‘Flying Fortress’. During World War 2 these B-17s used to bomb German cities in Europe.
Sadly all these operators are gone. Most of these aircraft have crashed and their brave crew’s perished. I have travelled 3 times to Bolivia, much too late for the ‘Caniceros’ period, but luckily I was able to catch some of the old flying relic’s in action. This book is a tribute to the wonderful chapter of Bolivian Aviation and brave crews.
