When breast cancer enters your life, it touches so much more than your physical health. It affects how you see yourself and how you feel in your own skin. During my years working with women as a reconstructive surgeon, I've seen firsthand how breast reconstruction can become part of the healing process—physically, emotionally, and psychologically.
I began writing this book out of desperation. Desperation because I observed how difficult it was for patients to make informed decisions about breast reconstruction at a moment when they had just been confronted with a cancer diagnosis. Even when my own mother developed breast cancer, I found it challenging to clearly explain her options. The conversation about reconstruction involves multiple future steps with many unknown variables, making it even more difficult to understand.
Fortunately, more and more people are surviving a breast cancer diagnosis. That's why it's important to be able to look forward, even in dark times. Breast reconstruction isn't about getting back what cancer took away. It's about helping you feel comfortable and whole again, in whatever way matters most to you.
