This research focuses on the path of discovery and enhancement of the Via Appia, which began under the pontificate of Pius VI and continued until the first decades of the twentieth century. In Rome, since the second half of the eighteenth century, the debate that accompanied the birth of the science of antiquity and the development of the concept of preservation, was polarized on the comparison between archaeological culture and architectural culture. The interaction between these two concepts is central to identify the stages that marked the process that transformed the Appian Way into a large open-air museum. The different aspects of the two cultures are manifested in the activities of excavation, restoration and preservation. In a period in which the idea of the public utility of cultural heritage is progressively brought into focus, the phenomenon of open-air museums was born, which accompanies the change in models of conservation and display of antiquity.
