In daily life, we seem to effortlessly move through our environment. Although our environment is constantly changing and offers countless opportunities for interactions, this usually comes naturally to us. However, complex and unconscious brain processes are taking place in the background. In my thesis, I investigated a number of these processes. In the first part of my thesis, I studied how our brains select and prepare reaching movements. The results show that, when we have to choose between a movement with the left hand or the right hand, our brain prepares both movements. The brain therefore seems to start preparing movements even before the movement to be performed has been selected. In the second part of my dissertation, I studied how our brains ensure the smooth control of movements while driving a vehicle. The results show that the brain uses information from the senses for this. In addition, it seems to be able to learn the relationship between the steering movement and the feedback from the senses. This way, the brain can make predictions to better estimate the movement of the vehicle.
