    Van oudsher is de studie van de retorica gericht op het verbale persuasieve discours in het politieke, juridische of ceremoniële domein. Retorica speelt zich af in de doxa; en focust zich dus op het publieke discours dat zich afspeelt in een onzekere wereld zonder ultieme waarheid.

    Culturele en politieke omstandigheden sporen ons telkens opnieuw aan om de positie en reikwijdte van de discipline te blijven bepalen. Een van de belangrijkste kenmerken van onze tijd is de groeiende invloed van visuele communicatie.

    Deze bundel onderzoekt hoe de discipline van de retorica zich ontwikkelt op dit moment, en hoe traditie en vernieuwing met elkaar te rijmen vallen. Hij behandelt nieuwe theoretische perspectieven, en stelt diverse retorische analyses van actuele cases voor. Een groot deel van deze collectie presenteert specifiek onderzoek naar de (nieuwe) media en de visuele overtuigingskracht van foto's, grafieken, cartoons, documentaires en video's.
