The booklet on psychotherapy: AUTONOMY

Becoming the person you truly are

Yoella Waasdorp MSc • Boek • paperback

  • Samenvatting
A booklet about autonomy, written by an acrredited clinical psychotherapist and healthcare psychologist, containing just forty pages to make sure that everyone may find the time to read it.
Most people will not be familiar with the term ‘autonomy’, but it is one of the most important aspects to safeguard your mental and physical well-being. The moment my clients understand what it means and learn how to apply it, I see how it helps them blossom. It is the synergy between body and mind. Making decisions without consciously feeling how your body responds causes chronic stress and may eventually lead to all sorts of complaints, like burnout, anxieties, depression, and autoimmune disease-related symptoms. This clearly structured booklet describes the rules of autonomy, including how we can be affected by feelings of fear-guilt-shame can counteract autonomy and how our hormone system responds. All in simple terms.

During my 30 years of experience I came to realise that many problems that people experience are linked to a deficient (early) development of autonomy. Restoring this ability to make autonomous decisions quickly results in positive changes. People soon see and experience the world from a new perspective.
As they start to understand why autonomy is contrary to selfishness, most people find it easier to (re)gain the freedom to truly decide for themselves.
With this series of Booklets on Psychotherapy, the author directly addresses those who want to invest in themselves. Yoella takes the reader by the hand to explain the simple rules of autonomy, which she does candidly and unpretentiously.

Examples of applying autonomy
I use various examples to illustrate this basic principle to my clients. The first one is the following:
You have worked hard all week and you are exhausted. It is 5:00 p.m. on a Friday. You have friends coming over for dinner at 6:00. You allow yourself to lie down on the couch for a well-earned moment of rest.
Just a few minutes later, your neighbour taps on your window, waving cheerfully. You drag yourself to your front door, where your neighbour says:
‘Gosh, I’m glad you’re home! I’m painting my hallway but I need to move a cupboard out of the way. Could you lend me a hand carrying it to the shed?’
What do I want?
You do not need to answer right now. Let’s move on to another example first. ×
