Remy Jungerman. Where the River Runs

Rob Perrée • Boek • paperback

  • Samenvatting
In his work Suriname-born Dutch artist Remy Jungerman (1959) searches for a visual language that will bring different cultures together. His recent work is inextricably bound up with African traditions and the Western, modernistic art tradition. He is interested in the intersecting paths travelled by motifs from Africa, the Surinamese Maroon culture, and 20th century Modernism. By exploring the convergence of patterns and shapes from these seemingly disparate cultural landscapes, he reveals the distillation of time and identity. The majority of 'Remy Jungerman.Where the River Runs' comprises reproductions of his work. This visual component is complemented with essays shedding light on the subject matter from various aspects and from different perspectives. The following international critics have contributed to the book: Remco de Blaaij, Ingrid Braam, Leontine Coelewij, Roel Hijink, Charlotta Kotik, Charl Landvreugd, Adi Martis, Tumelo Mosaka, José Manuel Noceda, Rob Perrée, Sally & Richard Price, Benno Tempel, Joseph Underwood, Vincent van Velsen and Lilly Wei. Remy Jungerman lives and works in Amsterdam. He attended the Academy for Higher Arts and Cultural Studies, Paramaribo, Suriname, before moving to Amsterdam where he studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He has exhibited works at Prospect3 (New Orleans), Brooklyn Museum (New York), El Museo del Barrio (New York), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Centraal Museum (Utrecht), Afrika Museum (Berg en Dal), Museum Het Domein (Sittard), Museum Arnhem, Rennie Museum (Vancouver), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), Malba (Buenos Aires), Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, Havana Biennale (Cuba) and Museum Bamako (Mali) among others. His work has been featured in numerous publications and acquired by various institutions and private collectors worldwide. Jungerman represented the Netherlands, together with Iris Kensmil, at the 58th Venice Biennale 2019.
