A note from the photographer:
I am Yoerie Custers from The Netherlands. For thousands of years we, as humankind, have creatively crafted a world for ourselves. We have made houses to live in, churches so that we could gather to worship, hospitals to aid our ailing and vehicles to transport us around this spinning planet. Through this compilation of photography and poems, I want to give you a glimpse into that evolution. I want to how you a world beyond modern architecture and clean buildings. I want you to hear the stories that these abandoned buildings tell. I want to transport you into an era full of progress; full of discovery; full of history. I have intentionally withheld the location and factual details of these photos from you. As you ingest this book, I want you to let your mind wander. As you stare at the ruins, I want you to see the life that once teemed in these spaces.
Heather Beamish, a poet from Toronto, has partnered with me to help tell the story of these photos. Let her words be the guide that ushers you into the pain and promise of this time.
These are the secrets of neglected places.
