The Ghent Alliance

Antoon Vanherpe • Boek • paperback

  • Samenvatting
The Ghent Alliance Imagine just two artists and one patron involved in the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece. Albeit this is impossible. The lack of documents is not an excuse in the case of the evidence of photographic images. The author proceeds through the WYSIWYG method. This basis proves efficient as the way of painting is accurate, precise, and honest. The historical checks and balances reveal a prolific story of a dynamic community of artists.

Fragment

The medieval lore teaches us that Judocus Vijd commissioned Hubert and Jan van Eyck to make the Ghent Altarpiece. Judocus passed away in 1439. The wealthy couple donated polder soils (diked marshes) in Verrebroek in 1435 to the foundation Vijd-Borluut in the Saint John's Church for the maintenance of the chapel and to cover the costs of their founding. As Huizinga did, this book mines the past visual world as historical evidence. First, however, a biography describes the deeds, the words, and the art. ×
