Tulips and their Natural History

Jacobus J de Groot • Boek • hardback

  • Samenvatting
For most of the last sixty years I have been growing bulbs. When we were children, our father, who at that time ran a bulb nursery, gave us a small patch of soil for growing our own bulbs. The first tulip I remember growing was T. fosteriana Madame Lefeber. Later, when my brother and I ran a cut-flower nursery, my bulb collection grew larger and larger, and I am still adding to it today. It includes species from all kinds of origins: trade, seeds, gifts and exchanges with other collectors.

Later I travelled a lot in Central Asia, Iran and the trans-Caucasus with Wim Lemmers, Diana Everett, Rosie Steele and occasionally others to see tulips in their natural habitat. On almost all these trips we were accompanied by local botanists who showed us the most beautiful, botanically interesting places. In Kazakhstan, these were Vladimir Kolbintsev and Anna Ivaschenko. In Uzbekistan Ivan Ivanowitsch Malkov and Komiljon Tojibaev. In Tajikistan Isakul Turakulov. In Kyrgyzstan Georgy Lazkov and Alexander Naumenko and in Armenia Nora Grabrelian and Arnis Seisums. Without the help of these guides, we would not have been able to find so many different species. Now that I am retired, I finally have time to put my knowledge of tulips down on paper.
