The ISPS Code is at its core a management system, and coherent set of mandatory rules and supplementary guidance to achieve, maintain and if possible improve maritime security strategy, objectives and performance. In order to ensure that the port facility's security management system works, an annual audit of the entire system is carried out, from the PFSP and the application of the security measures and procedures it contains to trainings, drills and exercises and analysing and the reporting and analysis of security incidents. An audit is a systematic, independent and documented evaluation process during which it is examined and assessed whether the system and its application is meeting the stated requirements and expectations. This book explains to the reader how an audit works, how to prepare one and how to carry it out in relation to port facility security.
